sterling snowflake bracelet Mechanical Screw Clasp

Intermediate metals project.

I use this clasp in most of my necklaces; it is strong and also acts as an ornamental element. The basic idea is to create a spatial illusion that is actually functional. Using the silver tubes is the simplest method, but try creating different sizes and shapes of hollow forms. (It may take a little practice to get the two pieces to fit tightly together.)

This clasp can be made in a variety of ways with a variety of different materials, from rocks to hollow balls. Experiment; do what works best for you.

Editor's note: Todd Reed is profiled on page 26 in the December 1999 Lapidary Journal; see “The Softer Side of Forging.”
