Jewelry Artist Doer's Profile

DONE
I’ve won some awards but am most
proud of the business I built. I
wouldn’t be a jeweler and artist
without the customers who appreciate
and support my business.
DOING
I work a regular eight-hour day in
the studio preparing inventory to sell
at shows and I attend shows. I am
always trying to balance stocking my
inventory with exploring new designs.
FIRST PIECE
Hmmm, I think it was a pair of copper
earrings. The focus of the project
was to practice sawing, piercing, and
finishing. I’m pretty sure they’re buried
in my studio somewhere — I assure
you, no one would want to wear them!
JEWELRY HEROES
I appreciate design in any medium.
I can’t really say that I follow what’s
going on in my field. I think it’s a good
thing because I don’t want my work to
be derivative of others.
DESIGN SOURCES
I aim to create designs that are clean
and simple. The Bauhaus philosophy
of simple design backed by excellent
craftsmanship fits my ideals, and I
adopted the Bauhaus name for one of
my lines.
FAVORITE PART OF DOING
Problem solving. Without it, the work
would become redundant and boring. As
a designer I must bridge the gap between
lofty ideas and practical wearability.
THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY
For years I should have had a better
ventilation system in my studio. I
know it’s a dull answer, but safety is
important.
ON BENCH NOW
New design experiments: many little
parts I’ve constructed and abandoned.
They may sit around for months or
years before I return to them with a
fresh eye and incorporate them into a
piece of jewelry.
